One of the essentials of building a successful property career is having the right mind-set. Lots of people like the idea of property as a means of generating residual income, but every property meeting has at least as many people who are ‘getting into property’ as those who are already in possession of at least one property or have already started the buying and selling process.
Most of the ‘getting into property’ people are still in the same position a year down the line. What’s holding them back?
They’ll have all kinds of really good reasons - haven’t saved up enough for their deposit yet, have a poor credit record and can’t get an affordable mortgage, have had a family emergency and have had to dip into their savings, are getting negative vibes from their friends and family, etc. etc. etc.
How to face barriers to success
There are ways around all these things - if you really want to do something. Everyone faces setbacks in life and the difference between those who make it and those who don’t is mind-set.
The secret of success is to look at the problem or barrier to getting where you want to go and instead of letting it stop you, start rejigging your plan to find a way past it. If you’re driving along a road and you come to a ‘road closed’ sign you don’t turn around and go home, you find another way to get where you’re going.
The same applies to roadblocks in your career path. There’s always another way; you may not know it exists yet, but you’ll find it if you’re determined to overcome it. No excuses - no matter how rational they may appear!
Focus on what you want - not what you don’t
Have you ever heard of ‘blue elephant syndrome’? This is how it works:
Think of a blue elephant. Got it clear in your mind’s eye? Great. Now DON’T think about a blue elephant? What are you thinking about?
I’ll put money on the fact that the first thing that came into your head was a blue elephant, even though you’re trying NOT to think about it. That’s because we focus on what the sentence is about and it’s really hard to refocus without a clear vision of what you WANT.
If I’d said ‘think about a cottage garden’ instead of ‘DON’T think about a blue elephant’ you’d have something to focus on. Unfortunately, our language and thinking is conditioned more on the negative than the positive side, so it’s up to you to get into the habit of thinking about what you want, not what you don’t want.
Better still the more vivid your vision of what you want, the more real it becomes and the better the chance of you getting it.
Be prepared to do whatever it takes
Quitters never win! Or as Henry Ford once said ‘It doesn’t matter how many times you fall down. It’s how many times you get up again that makes the difference.’
What are you prepared to do to achieve your goal? We started out talking about becoming a property investor, but it applies to any area of endeavour.
These are all essential and the tools that every millionaire uses.
